The Daily Devocast brings you daily encouragement from God’s word. Today’s devotional message Praising God from the Pit is based on Psalm 69:30.
I will praise the name of God with a song, and will magnify him with thanksgiving.
(King James Version, Psalm 69:30)
When we’re facing life’s inevitable difficulties, we often gravitate towards music, movies, and other media that reinforces and feeds the emotions we’re feeling. Even though it feels good and appropriate to wallow in the mud of our circumstances for a time, what we really need are things that pull us in the opposite direction. If we’re sad, we need to be moved towards happiness. If we’re angry, we need to be moved towards peace and calm.
One of the most effective tools I’ve found to shift my emotions in the midst of a dark season is worship music. Music has the power to almost instantly transport us from the pit of lament and despair to a realm of highest praise, so the next time you’re walking through a dark time, don’t turn to media that’s going to keep you in a dark and brooding place. Turn to media that’s going to empower you to proclaim God’s truth over your circumstances.
Prayer: God we thank you for the gift of music. For those of us facing a dark time right now, I pray that you’d put a song in their path today that will move them from sadness to joy, from anger to peace. Amen.
Action Step: My challenge for you today is to create a dark pit playlist on your phone or MP3 player. Select 3-5 songs that you know will help you emerge from a dark place. The next time you’re dealing with anger, sadness, and other deep emotions, find a quiet place and ask God to speak to you through those songs. Enter into worship and soak in God’s truth. I’m confident He’ll show up and turn your circumstances around.
