Psalm 51:10 – Getting Down to that Squishy God-filled Center

The Daily Devocast brings you daily encouragement from God’s word. Today’s devotional message Getting Down to that Squishy God-filled Center is based on Psalm 51:10.

Create in me a clean heart, O God; and renew a right spirit within me.

(King James Version, Psalm 51:10)

Do you remember the television commercial where the boy asks the owl how many licks does it take to get to the center of a Tootsie Roll Tootsie Pop? For many years I’ve been pondering a similar question when it comes to prayer, Bible reading, and personal transformation.

Most of us would say we long for the clean heart and renewed spirit talked about in Psalm 51:10, but on a day to day basis very few of us seem to put in the time and effort to actually make that longing a reality.

Now don’t get me wrong. I’m not trying to shame you here. I struggle with this too. However, the reality is that if we want to see uncommon results, we need to take uncommon action. Having spent time with hundreds of Christian authors and leaders over the past decade, the main thing I’ve learned is that life-changing, world shifting transformation happens behind the scenes. It’s time spent in God’s word and time spent in your prayer closet that shifts you on the inside. That’s what turns your heart of stone into a soft and squishy God-saturated center.

Prayer:  Father, we all long to be changed for the better and that comes by spending more time with you. I know that everybody’s circumstances are unique, so we press in today and ask that you’d reveal to each of us how to increase our time with you in the midst of our busy daily schedule. Reveal to each of us an individualized strategy on how to get more of you inside of us, so that we can experience the fullness of the transformation that is available through our relationship with you. Make that line you where you end and we begin impossible to discern because we’re so saturated with your glory. Amen.

Action Step:  Look for ways to intentionally create space for more time with God in your daily schedule. It could be in the morning, on your coffee break, or in the evening. Pick one specific time where you’ll be praying, reading your Bible, or reading a devotional book. Do this consistently for 7 days and see how it shifts your relationship with God. Note any specific breakthroughs or divine surprises in your journal.
