The Daily Devocast brings you daily encouragement from God’s word. Today’s devotional message God Sees My Broken Heart is based on Psalm 34:18.
The Lord is close to the brokenhearted; he rescues those whose spirits are crushed.
(New Living Translation, Psalm 34:18)
Throughout our lives, each of us will encounter circumstances that break our heart and crush our spirit. Many of these situations are thrust upon us with little to no warning. I want you to start thinking about an unexpected heart-wrenching circumstance have you encountered this past year and keep it in the back of your mind. We’ll come back to that in today’s prayer and action step.
Personally I’ve encountered several in the past year, but the one that sticks out as the most challenging for me was an unexpected job transition. On this side of that experience, I can look back with clear hindsight and fully grasp the things I felt that I was losing. There was a loss of status, a loss of relationships, and a loss of the dream of completing the many important projects my team had already set in motion.
I now see that a lot of my identity was tied up in that role and as I walked through the mourning and grieving stages of leaving that job behind, God began to show me that He wanted to use this transition as an opportunity for me to be redefined on His terms. He wants me to see myself as He sees me and to step fully into the call and destiny He has on my life for the next decade and beyond.
Even though the job transition was a difficult journey to take, God used it in a major way to mold and shape me. He didn’t waste any part of the process. My broken heart is now mended and my spirit no longer feels crushed. As my good Father, He was pleased to do this for me and He wants to do it for you too.
Prayer: Father, we know that you see the places where our heart has been broken and our spirit has been crushed. We ask that you’d intercede in whatever situation came to mind as we went through today’s devotional reading, leading us out of what likely feels like a dark and narrow place into a new place that is bright, wide open, and filled with Your joy. Amen.
Action Step: Get alone with God and ask him to speak into that heart-crushing situation you identified earlier. Ask Him to specifically reveal to you His heart for you and His plan for walking with you through this trial. Be sure to note any insights and breakthroughs in your journal.
