The Daily Devocast brings you daily encouragement from God’s word. Today’s devotional message God Helps Me Get Off the Pity Party Carousel is based on Psalm 118:5-7.
5 In my distress I prayed to the Lord, and the Lord answered me and set me free.
6 The Lord is for me, so I will have no fear. What can mere people do to me?
7 Yes, the Lord is for me; he will help me. I will look in triumph at those who hate me.
(New Living Translation, Psalm 118:5-7)
Have you ever had a time in your life when it felt like the whole world was against you? I know I have, many times over. When we find ourselves with the whole world seemingly pressing in on us, it can be easy to jump on what I like to call the pity party carousel. Now, this isn’t the fun sort of carousel. On the pity party carousel we just go round and round, wallowing in our hurt and pain, wondering why the world hates us.
I didn’t always understand how to navigate this properly, but now when I realize I’m stuck on the pity party carousel, I know to bring my distressing situation to the Lord in prayer. Even though I might be feeling like there is nobody is in my corner advocating for me, The Lord says he is for me and that’s more than enough.
Is there a part of your life stuck on the pity party carousel? It’s time to ask Jesus to help you get off this not so fun ride so you can be restored to fullness of life.
Prayer: Thank you, Jesus, for always being there when we call. Help us to identify any area in our lives where we’re stuck on the pity party carousel. We ask that you’d help us to end this unproductive cycle and bring us clarity around the circumstances that brought us here. We pray that you would show us how to move forward from this situation and properly deal with any related offenses, asking for forgiveness for places we were in the wrong and offering forgiveness to those who’ve wronged us. Amen.
Action Step: Here’s today’s action step: If Jesus brought some specific people or situations to mind when I got to the part of today’s prayer that talked about forgiving and asking for forgiveness, take action. Don’t let the sun go down before you resolve this. This is the sort of bold step that will help you to get off the pity party carousel for good.
